gegisian_artwork4aGreek Armenian artist Aikaterini Gegisian (b. 1976) examines questions of history, diasporic identities, belonging and collective memory.

Her practice spans film, photography and installation, and her works drift between the subjective and the political, the personal and the social.

In her photographic output, she juxtaposes pictures that she finds in a range of printed matter, establishing connections between disparate visual languages, eras, people and cultures.

Aikaterini lives and works between Middlesbrough & Thessaloniki, Greece.

In 2015, she was one of the exhibiting artists at the Armenian Pavilion, 56th Venice Biennale, which received the Golden Lion for best national participation.

In 2016, Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art organised the first survey of her moving image practice.

Her work was presented at recent exhibitions such as the 6th Moscow Biennale (Russia); 3rd Mardin Biennale (Turkey); 2nd Tallin Photomonth (Estonia); 1st Thessaloniki Biennale (Greece); and 6th Gyumri Biennale (Armenia).

Her work has also been shown in museums, galleries and festivals internationally, including DEPO, Istanbul; BALTIC, Newcastle; Calvert 22 Foundation, London; Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, Athens; NARS Foundation, New York; Centre for Contemporary Art, Thessaloniki; Spike Island, Bristol; Kasseler Dok Fest, Kassel; Oberhausen Film Festival. Her work has been featured in The Guardian, Financial Times, The British Journal of Photography, THESEEN, thisistomorrow & Ibraaz.
